Birgitan Polku Trip Report: Tampere - Lempäälä

Last weekend I was out with some mates from Couchsurfing, and it was a very relaxed and social trip. We walked about 13 km per day, and had a nice time by the fire in the evening. Its very different if you walk with someone else or a group, average speed goes down a bit, more photo breaks, and interesting conversations are some of the differences in comparison to walking alone. This next weekend I'm on another trip with mates from Couchsurfing, walking from Parkano to the Seitseminen National Park and then to Kuru, three days starting Friday at noon.

Anyhow, I life in Tampere and because we had a beginner with us we made an easy overnight trip with sleeping in a lean-to shelter for my mates so they don't need to carry a tent. We walked out of the city and after a few minutes of me studying the map we were on the right trail.

Autum is in full swing here, and the promised rain didn't come.

Mushrooms everywhere.

And sunshine.

Plus blue sky.

We passed nice lakes on the way, which invited us to rest for a while and enjoy the nature.

As we arrived at the campsite, I pitched the Scarp 1, in hope of some rain over night.

And while it was no longer sunny on Sunday morning, there wasn't a drop of rain.

Mushrooms and fallen leaves were everywhere.

As you also can see here =)

The Birgitan Polku sign. A nice trail for a short weekend trip, with three lean-to shelters on the route.

There even was some wildlife on the trail.

A bus ride from Lempäälä and we were back in Tampere in the early evening. I think in winter that will be a good route to test snowshoe walking, there where some small elevations and with the lean-to shelters one doesn't even need to take a tent. It would be a good test run before I head out to the National Parks and walk there, its a bit safer so close to home.

  1. 'Walked out of the city'... you are lucky to have somewhere so beautiful, so close. Nice to see the autumnal colours.

I understand the compulsion to give the Scarp a full test, but don't hope for rain!!!!!

  2. Indeed you are lucky being able to walk straight out of the City. I have never heard anyone say 'I pitched in hope of some rain' before! But still it would be good to see how the Scarp1 copes!

  4. Hei Northern Walker, I'm lucky indeed, one of the benefits of living in Tampere! I gave up the hope for rain. I guess when Joe comes here he will bring the rain along from Norway :D

James, wasn't it you who would like to know how the Scarp does during rain?!

  5. Moi!

I just found your blog recently, I think because I was searching for hiking trails/parks to go hiking in. I'm from Canada, but I live in Helsinki, and I miss hiking but none of my friends are very interested. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I've been enjoying your trip reports and pictures...I carry my heavy SLR everywhere with me too :)

  8. randommaia, nice that you found me =) Maybe you should show your friends some of your hiking pictures and that might be able to convince them of joining you! And if it doesn't work, you can drop me an email and we could try to go for a walk together sometime.

wooki, thanks for stopping by and commenting!

James, if not this weekend (weather forecast does say rain this weekend, but so it did last weekend) then at the latest when Joe is here I'll be able to report on how the Scarp does in the rain!

  9. It does fine James. Maybe a little rain blown in under the top vent but little is the word. I like the forest Hendrik. Just great to be honest, and close to home. I see your list of kit to test is growing in the sidebar. Keep at it and have a nice time away.

  10. Martin, thank you for giving some info on the Scarp and rain. We got thick mist and a bit of rain at the moment, so I think I'm getting the opportunity to test it myself this weekend. Yes, forest we got quite a bit over here and some of them are very beautiful.

  11. nice pictures of mushrooms...
the one in the first picture is clearly not edible, and I would'nt eat the big mushrooms in the second mushroom picture either... but I quite sure there's some small cantharellus tubaeformis hiding at the lower left and in the middle and on the right of middle of the picture. leave 'em for a week or two and they'd grow into something worth picking! But given that mushrooms are potentially deadly, better check with local muahrooms expert if you are 101% sure yourself.

  12. Hey! What's all this about me bringing the bad weather with me?! :-) I expect to come to Finland and find wall-to-wall sunshine and crisp autumnal days in the forests!

Great pics as ever Hendrik. Looking forward to my visit!

  13. Hej Anonymous, thanks for your comments. We've been picking those Suppilovahvero during this weekend and made a delicious soup out of them (we had a mushroom expert with us!),

Joe, I just heard that Bergen is the most rainy city in Norway. I guess its going to be perfect if you're here, like this weekend - no rain, once again!
