This time just a short one nighter. Leaving on Saturday at noon with some mates from Couchsurfing. Walking right out of the city for about 11 km, where we stay at a small lake where there is a lean-to shelter. I take the tent, and with the promised rain for both days the Scarp 1, the Trekmates Amphibian socks and the Rab Momentum Jacket and Drillium Pants will come in handy and show what they're made of! With the help of Dave I shaved some more grams from my backpack, and am now under 10 kg for the one night including food, water and the DSLR. Its also the first night out for the GoLite Ultra 20° and the Smartwool Microweight Zip T and bottoms, so there's gonna be some initial reviews on these next week.
Because I literally walk out of the city I can be so experimental with the clothes - in case something goes wrong I am not more than a few kilometers to the next road and a taxi ride from home, where I can jump in the Sauna and a warm shower =) Here is the packing list for the weekend, let me know what you think:

Have a nice weekend!

Out for the weekend
It's always good to refine our kit, I tend to only use a drysack for my sleepingbag/spare baselayer, socks and my down vest/jacket and don't use a pack cover.
ReplyDeleteI personally prefer to have a dry baselayer for sleeping as even if the set you wear feels dry there's probably some dampness which may make you feel colder at night. I've had a few bad experiences with damp baselayer, socks in particular but of course you have to find out for yourself what works and the best way is to test other peoples methods on short trips. If you aren't taking a spare baselayer it may be better to sleep unclothed in the silk liner rather than continue to wear your day baselayer/socks.
One thing I want to try is to use a disposable 'Tyvek' overall (kombi?) as sleepwear and to help protect my sleeping bag. I read about it on Robin (Fenlanders) blog.

Almost forgot, I've managed to get the Trekmates Bamboo review posted.
Richard, lets see how I fare tomorrow and Sunday =) I am actually thinking of taking something dry for sleeping, but I guess on the other hand I have plenty of time to dry out my baselayer. Lets see, on Sunday I am smarter.
ReplyDeleteDisposable I am opposed to out of principle. I prefer long lasting garments which can be recycled or rot away in nature after disposal.
And now over to read the review!
An excellent point about 'disposable' I would have intended to use it more than once but you're correct that it will need to be disposed of sometime and isn't recyclable.
ReplyDeleteI'll need to check what other 'disposable' items I use that could be replaced, my Ronson lighter is one thing and I may go back to using my IMCO petrol lighter.
the tyvek overall is a great idea.
ReplyDeletewe've got these overalls at work for the cleaning personal
i think i must make some tests with the overall
