Gear Talk: Rab Momentum Jacket & Drillium Pants

I have been wearing my Rab Momentum Jacket and Drillium Pants since quite a while now, time enough to pass some initial judgement about these two eVent rain garments.

The hood on the Momentum turns with your head without being in the way. Also note the long zips on the Drillium Pants.

The important bits: Momentum Jacket, Size S, weighs 328 g. It is made of a lightweight 3 layer eVent® fabric, has two chest pockets - big enough for maps - and a helmet compatible hood. The hood is excellent, Rab did a great job in its design, turning your head is no problem as the hood follows your movements. The wired peak keeps snow, slush and rain out of your face, and the zipper goes high, so your whole face is protected from the wind, rain and snow.

Long arms and a single exit hem drawcord, which is easy to operate with one hand.

The arms on the Momentum are long and have velcro cuffs. The long arms are very smart, as they enable you to just pull down the sleeves over your hands and also these will then stay dry. No problems with water climbing up the sleeves either. The zipper might feel like it goes a bit difficult for some, I have no problems with it. Finally, the back is a bit longer and keeps your buttocks protected.

The Drillium is a no frills rain pants made of the same lightweight eVent® 3 layer fabric as the Momentum, and weighs in at 215 g in Size S. The top has a drawcord, the legs have each an about knee high water resistant zip with storm flap behind it, and a drawcord at the end to zip it close.

Articulated knees in action =)

I wore the combo in sunshine, wind, rain, slush, snow, from temperatures ranging between 20°C till -9°C and stayed well ventilated and dry all the time. I know, there's people going around saying eVent wouldn't be any better as GoreTex, that it is clever marketing and what not, so I can only tell you my own experiences. I have owned a few Haglöfs GoreTex jackets, and they always were a disappointment, I was sweating on the inside and got wet, and the GoreTex let after sustained rain the water through, getting double wet. I don't think much about Softshells, of which I also have owned a few, they're for me just not up to the task. I prefer to layer my clothing as needed, and these two eVent garments were really excellent. I also wasn't gingerly to them, and I went bushwacking and climbing with them, and till now they show no wear and tear.

My conclusion is that this is an excellent lightweight and durable rain combo. The make is top notch, and you wouldn't expect anything else from Rab. They pack very small - small enough for me to even take them in my shoulder bag to work when I expect rain - and they're quickly deployed when needed. In the temperatures we have now its often for me enough to wear only a baselayer and these two garments over them, and stay warm while being out of the wind and snow. Personally I feel that eVent is ways ahead of GoreTex in regards to ventilation and waterproofness. My girlfriend also approves, as you can wash eVent normally - and they even recommend that you wash it often!

  1. Hendrik, that's a really neat looking combo. Do the side zips on the pants have double-headed zips to allow you to vent them or are they just for making it easy to pull them on? I really rate my Rab Bergen pants but they're just too much to carry around in the summer.

I love the fit of Rab's jackets, the long arms are a real bonus. I'm still thinking about waiting for the Demand Pull-on next year...

  2. Rab makes nice gear and eVENT is top notch stuff. I wish it was more widely available. I have a pair of the Rab Bergen eVENT pants which is pretty much what I wear in the snow. If I know I'll be in rain during my whole trip and the weather is cool enough, I'll wear them the whole trip. Unfortunately, because it doesn't rain much out in my neck of the woods, they stay home most of the time unless its winter as I usually elect to carry a rain skirt to save weight.

  3. Joe, they're one way, but there's a little button at the end which you can leave closed, then open the zipper for venting. I haven't needed this yet, as the eVent vents enough for me. And if you're not in dire need of a new jacket, then I reckon the wait for the Demand Pull-on will be a good decision =)

Jolly, glad we agree on eVent being top notch! It seems to be getting more available, from the top of my head I know Integral Designs, Montane, MLD and Rab use it, and there must be more - but those might not be UL. I'm planning to wear the Drillium also in all of winter, for the go they keep me warm enough with a base layer, and especially dry and out of the wind.

This comes to an odd place but I don't write to BPL forums where you were wondering about winter sleeping set up.

I'd like to aknowledge that according to the manufacturer sites the combination of:
    - Golite Ultra 20 + Nunatak Arc Expedition + BPL 90 Quilt weights
    - with BPL 180 quilt 1982g

These would be heavier than the winter sleeping bag you allready have, and you'd still lack the head area insulation. Also the possible bivy sack will add even more to the weight.

I'd consider just using the Joutsen bag if it fits to your pack. If you sleep a week in a row in temps below -20C there will be some ice forming in your sleeping system. Especially with down this may make it harder to compress and even a bit less warm.

If you end up going with layered quilts be sure that the ones on top are roomier than the ones inside so they won't compress too much. It would be better to have synthetic on top so that the freezing point of evaporating humidity will be in synthetics, keeping your warm down dry and warm.

I could provide you nice formulas for combining sleeping bags but that doenst apply to quilts. Sorry.

PS. Where are you planning to hike in winter?

  5. I need (really want!) a new waterproof jacket. Currently have one with Goretex XCR material, had it for over a year and honestly I'm getting wet on the inside. At first I thought it was leaking but from reading on here and other places it seems that it's condensation on the inside?! So eVent is a good option then??

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hei Ange, its your sweat which builds up on the inside of the jacket, which the Gore Tex XCR can not evaporate out of the jacket. I have been wearing my eVent jacket while hiking and also running and had no problems with moistness building up on the inside, it all went out and the jacket and I wear dry. eVent is currently the best option out there, even if some people and Gore Tex try to say that Gore Tex and eVent are the same. I can highly recommend you the Momentum.

  7. Hi Hendrik,

I'm thinking of getting Rab overtrousers and trying to decide between the Drillium and Bergen pants. The photos of your Drillium pants look like the photos I found of the Bergen pants. Especially the long zipper confuses me. I thought the Drillium only had calf length zippers as opposed to the 3/4 zippers of the Bergen.
Judging from your photos, I'd think that the zipperlength of the Drillium should be long enough.

  8. Hei Ilka,

Rab says themselves that the zippers are half calf length, but they really go a bit over the knee. I find the zipper length just fine, but I am also not really using them that often. I believe you should be fine with either pants =)

  9. Hi Hendrik,

Great blog - very informative, thanks. Out of interest did you consider/try the Drillium jacket? It was apparently revamped in 2009 and seems pretty similar to the Momentum.

    Cheers, Ed

  10. Hi Ed, thanks for the positive remark. I had a look at the Drillium Jacket, though ultimately settled for the Momentum as its still a bit lighter.

  11. Hi Hendrik, I was wondering about the color of the RAB Momentum jacket in the review. Is it the 'Beluga' version or did you manage to find a fully black one? From what I have seen in online shops, Beluga color seems more like light grey than black. Any comments on this?

  12. I own a pair of Bergen pants, my waist is suited to size S, but my inside leg is 32" so I find the leg length too short. Any trousers I am wearing underneath poke out or my feet get wet as a result. I notice from the photos of the Drilliums here that the leg length also looks too short.

Otherwise they perform really well. But I wish they would make a choice of leg lengths. This is a problem I find with many overtrousers so I often end up buying one size above my normal one.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anonymous, Beluga is Black. It is as black as it gets, proper Ninja black =)

Simon, I agree with you on the length of the legs. For me it is OK, the trousers go slightly over the shoes which is enough for me, on rainy days I wear my Goretex socks underneath so I am usually fine.

  14. I've got a Haglöfs LIM Ozone jacket (Gore-Tex Pro shell, 342g) and Montane Venture pants (eVent, 346g) as my wet weather set up. The Venture panrts look identical to the Rab Drillium pants but have double zips so the pants can be vented at the top. I've found that walking an entire day in these, if it looks as if the rain might really come down, is great - not a hint of sweat as eVent breathes so well. In the wet they are simply fantastic and, on boggy ground, they obviate the need for gaiters. I don't pack anything else and they've become my primary hiking trouser if there is the chance of wet weather. The LIM Ozone is a snug fit, which I prefer and is so light for a proper jacket that, as a wet-weather set up, it can handle virtually anything. I like Pro-Shell- eVent is more breathable I would venture to suggest, but Haglöfs have managed, in the LIM Ozone, to get a full waterproof jacket for minimal weight.

  15. Hello Hendrik,

whats about the durability of the momentum jacket during coninuing heavy pack use?

Thats a point that matters to me.
Can anyone tell me something about it?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Daniel, I don't have a heavy pack, so take this with caution ;) I use this jacket now since nearly a year for pretty much all the time, out backpacking as well as in the city. It still looks like new and there's no problems as of now. One of Rab's principles is to make very durable gear, so I am certain that this jacket and pants will see many more years of use. I hope that helps!

  17. You said you wear a small in the momentum. It looks like you have a nice fit. Just wondering what your height and weight you are. I'm basically that same slim build as you are but I guess your probably a lot taller. I'm 5'6" and 9st. I have a marmot aegis in small but I could fit two of me in it. Does rab stuff fit a bit slimmer?

On a side note I heard gore tex pro stuff is like e-vent. Have you any experience with the pro line?
I have neither so I don't know but a lot of people say e-vent is the best.

Oh and what are those adidas's your wearin', they look sweet and that base layer too.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hei Anonymous, I am 175 cm tall and weigh 65 kg. I have no idea of the sizing of Marmot, but I think the Rab stuff has a slim and athletic fit.

I have no experience with Gore-Tex Pro, and the shoes are Adidas Supernova Riot =)

  19. Hi Hendrik, what would you say is a better jacket, the Demand pull-on or the momentum?
I have heard that the momentum is a bit too short in front, i am 175cm height also.

  20. Thanks for this review. It was the one that helped me making up my mind and go for the Rab Momentum. I live in Ireland, so no need to say that when it comes to hiking/walking with the rain, I know what I'm talking about. ;)
I just love it. It's light, breathable, waterproof, fits in a day pack easily, you wash it whenever you like, the hoof really moves with your head... I also use it in the city as it is quite design (even though I went for the bright magenta womens model!). The only thing is that you can't fold the hoof, but this rain jacket was designed for being technical and light, and that's what it does. I wore it during heavy snow falls this winter (Irish standards...) and it kept me perfectly dry.

I also discovered EVent with this jacket, and I think I won't get back to Gore Tex after that.

No regret, and I am one happy user, for sure!

  21. The hood I meant :-s

  22. Glad you like the jacket =) I've been lately using the Haglöfs OZO Pullover as my main jacket, I prefer it over the Demand from Rab. However, the Momentum still is my favourite jacket, the hood is great and I like its pockets as well.

  23. What Do you think about the Momentum wearing with a backpack? Is it durable enough or sholud i take the Rab Alpine jacket for that kind of trecking (with backpack)?
