Live from the trail: TUFWT 1.0

Sitting in a warm, beautiful old cottage while my new-won friends are outside ice fishing and snowshoeing. We had a wonderful time hiking, and had temperatures of -4 C till -17 C. Now we enjoy the luxuries of a cottage with a stove and a sauna which we heat up every evening, with a dip in the ice hole as it is tradition in Finland. A full report next weekend, as we have a few more days in this peaceful, perfect spot.

    Looks great!

Remember to build a quinzee (lumikammi) just for fun and practise. Takes an hour to shovel the snow in a pile, let it stay for few hours and then carve your new home. You get wet but you have a warm cottage. Great experience and fun!

It's wise to use some 40cm long sticks to mark the thickness of the walls. And make a decend hole for venting. And now when the temps are not quite arctic it might be a good idea to pack the snow a bit while piling it up.
