About / FAQ

Moro! My name is Hendrik Morkel, and I am the author of Hiking in Finland. I started this blog in the spring of 2009, after reading many interesting outdoor blogs and being inspired by them. Seeing that there was no blog about UL backpacking in Finland which is in English, I took the duty upon myself to represent this beautiful country. You will read here about my adventures in Finland, Sweden and Norway, gear reviews, videos and interviews with UL cottage manufacturers.

If I am not backpacking or writing about it, I'm an entrepreneur. I run my own company, Korpi Consulting which is an environmental management consultancy - that means I help companies to optimize their environmental performance. To see what goes on in my life on a daily basis, follow me on Twitter. If you got a question or comment, please feel free to contact me.

FAQ: Your English is funny. Where are you from?
My dad was German and my mom is Dutch; I consider myself European.

So why do you life in Finland then?
A woman was the reason I moved to Finland, and my love for the country's nature, culture and people is the reason I stayed. I am now also running my own business here in Finland, and am in a happy relationship.

You have good access to gear, how come?
I have a fair amount of test gear, which I get from the manufacturers, distributors and shops for testing. However, I am 100% independent and do not to write positive reviews if I don't think the piece of gear is good - if something ain't good, it will be said.

Pretty photos you take, what camera you use?
I have a Canon EOS 50D with a Canon EF-S 17-85 mm lens, and also used a Panasonic Lumix GF1 (Full Lumix GF1 Field Report) with a 20mm lens. I photograph in RAW on Aperture, Shutter and Manual settings and edit in Lightroom 3 (if I can be bothered).

I currently use a SONY NEX-5N, a Panasonic GH2 and a GoPro HERO2 for videos and photos on this website. I edit them on my MacBook Air in iPhoto and iMovie. You can get the gear here:

Do manufacturers and shops buy positive reviews?
As I said above, I am 100% independent and do not write a positive review if I don't think the item deserves it. There's also no money involved if I write a review, though the gear might be sponsored. The advertising space on the right helps me to run the blog but has no influence on the content.

I want to go hiking in Finland, where should I start?
I am writing a hiking and trekking in Finland guide, but that is still in the works. So for the moment you could start by checking Outdoors.fi and pick a destination. Ryanair flies to Tampere, as do Blue 1, Finnair, SAS and many more. VR is the train company here, and the bus timetables you can check here. If you need more information or would like to go for a walk with me, drop me an email!
