Dear Santa,
my backpacking mates and me decided to try out rock climbing. We save so much weight that a bit of UL climbing gear added to the pack doesn't slow us down, but allows us to experience new adventures. Because I'm smart, I decided the
Mammut Smart from
Watzmann-Laden would be the best belay device for me as a beginner - it is light, its dynamic braking of the climber in an accidental fall, plus that it locks even at low levels of force exerted by the belayer make it a perfect first belay device for me. With 87 grams it doesn't break my back, but allows for extra security when belaying. And it's even Made in Italy, isn't that great?!
Best,
- An aspiring UL-Backpacker

Advent Calendar - Door Nine
Cool! I'd like to try it out compared with a traditional belay device.
ReplyDeletenice stocking stuffer for my gr's son. Ta
ReplyDeleteWould be a great addition to my climbing gear. Didn't say what you wanted so here are a few pictures of me on some of my favorite climbs. Ro Shampo 5.12a (7a+) Red River gorge. Things as They are Now 5.12a (7a+) Rumney, NH and High Exposure 5.6 (4c) Gunks,NY Hope you enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI would use this to get into climbing with a few friends. There are a few good places in Texas that I've been wanting to try out, especially after a train at the campus climbing wall for a while.
ReplyDeleteID use it to get into climbing!
ReplyDeleteId love to start up climbing and this would be a great device to add to my gear!!!
ReplyDeleteThis would be a great addition to our rack.
ReplyDeleteFree copy of Rock & Ice how could you not want this for xmas. And then I would have no excuse to not go climbing with my kids.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who just got into climbing this summer, this would be a great addition to my rack.
ReplyDeleteFinally some climbing gear! :D My instructors showed me a Grigri, but this one seams to work similar (watched a video), it will fit my Bionic HMS fine and the belay loop of my arcteryx harness wich arriwes today, yey! :) Im at the point where i will get my own belay device soon, anyway i will probably buy a ATC too.
ReplyDeleteAnother great gift .... and again it would shave of some weight of my gear.
ReplyDeleteLooks interesting, Verso still going strong but why not try something new. Will test it out, no not on the wall, that's boring. Trees are the future!
ReplyDeleteOh Hendrik are you tired of all those raffles? ;-)
ReplyDeleteWonderful advent calendar, since I doesn't live with my parents anymore I missed these.
Regards
Hendrik
Would be great addition to my beginners kit, man.
ReplyDeleteAnother beginning climber here! So far I've only been using the simplest ATC-type so this would be interesting.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine who is working at the Bergwacht has one of these. It is a great piece of kit. Very safe and is really good for (very fast) roping.
ReplyDeleteVery nice piece of gear! So far I've always used my ATC, but this would make a great addition to my climbing gear.
ReplyDeleteNever seen a Mammut Smart before, I use a Black Diamong ATC XP but would happily try one of these. Chomping at the bit to get climbing again, resting a dodgy shoulder at the moment.
ReplyDeleteJust started climbing, so this would be a great first piece of gear :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks nice, and it's auto-blocking isn't it? (or semi?) Would like to try it... :)
ReplyDeleteWait, no pictures or stories wanted? Just a comment? :D The description of this device sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteAny comment? Far too easy! But I have always wanted to try one like this, my other belay devices are rather oversized.
ReplyDeleteA comment.
ReplyDeleteSorry, someone had to do it ;-D
What a nice piece of kit! I'm trying to put together a very light basic climbing kit to make more interesting trips and the Smart would be nice addition. Otherwise I'm forced to use HMS knot on carabiner... ;)
ReplyDeleteThis would be great to win, I've been considering buying one as a friend recommended it.
ReplyDeletewoha, one step ahead :-)
ReplyDeleteafter two years bouldering it will be a good start for climbing
ReplyDeletevery nice piece of kit. I have just started climbing myself. Its been a lot of fun, but not actually gotten around to buying a belay device or krab yet. Obviously, this needs to be remedied.
ReplyDeleteHendrik, thanks a lot for this AACI (Awesome Advents Calender Idea)!! Always nice checking out what Gear-Santa brought in the morning.
ReplyDeleteSince right now I am checking out new belay techniques and systems (you never improve your skills enough...), it would be really nice to give the Mammut Smart a try - sounds promising!
Thats a nice gift for my girlfriend!
ReplyDelete:) I love this calendar ;)
ReplyDeleteJoulupukki, this would be perfect for my new year's resolution to start climbing!
ReplyDeleteSmart ;-)
ReplyDeleteHey Hendrik. Could be a nice alternative to the trusted ATC. Especially when teaching my girlfriend to belay me.
ReplyDeleteNice one :-)
ReplyDeleteNice to put wife hanging on the cliff with this one. Or not...
ReplyDeleteLeaving a Comment. Looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteEntering!
ReplyDeleteGimme gimme......
ReplyDeletehej, this nice thing would be a great alternative to my "vintage-eight"
ReplyDeleteIf the calendar door is still "open" and I'm not too late to enter... I'm currently using a Wild Country ATC but in a transitional phase, wanting to progress from top-roping to leading, I've thought it might be a good time to explore some alternatives - maybe easier for feeding out rope. Looks great; light and simple to use. I think I like the look of the Smart, rather than a Grigri.
ReplyDeleteGreat piece of gear, especially for the ladies!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind winning some gear
